Bespoke double glazing helps new homes to achieve minimum U-value

  • 25 Mar 2015

Pilkington UK devised a bespoke double glazing solution for an energy efficient homes project

The project, which was recently showcased at an open day, saw the construction of two semi-detached homes.

The houses were made from an insulating concrete form system (ICF).

By using an ICF construction system, the project’s architects eliminated the need for cavity wall insulation, as insulation is already built in.

Double glazing from Pilkington

The houses were finished with a double glazing system, designed especially for the project by Pilkington UK.

Pilkington K Glass S was installed with a pane of clear Pilkington Optifloat to create a series of double-glazed insulating glass units.

The units have been designed to provide access to natural light as well as increased thermal control.

With the double glazing complimenting their ICF system structure, the houses can retain warmth for an average of 20 hours after heating.

They have achieved an overall U-value of 0.19W/m2k, which is one of the lowest for a domestic property in Britain.
