Flood defences are never far from the news and are becoming a significant factor in construction spend world wide. British engineers are making a major contribution to the design and construction of innovative solutions. CIWEM have a Global Environment Conference in the autumn looking at key strategic issues in water and environmental management.

Last week I was in Venice taking a look at the ‘Moses’ project. Venice lies in a lagoon which protects it from the open sea but in 1966 the city was hit by the most serious flooding in its history. (more…)

Houses set to cost 10 times average salaries by 2026

House building is in the news again this week with the National Housing and Planning Advice Unit study saying that homes are set to cost 10 times average salaries by 2026. The solution on offer is to continue to ease planning regulations and build more homes, including support for several major government sponsored house building projects. With house prices doubling since the late 1990s, and likely to repeat this rise in the next decade, this is going to continue to underpin construction growth which is already at record levels. World Environment Day stimulates environmental awareness

To coincide with World Environment Day taking place this week, Travis Perkins have launched an employee initiative designed to cut the company’s carbon emissions. World Environment Day is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment. Travis Perkins seem to be taking their responsibilities seriously and are also in a position to influence the supply chain as they handle over 100,000 building products. (more…)
