Ecobuild has just closed its doors after a very successful show at Earl’s Court, London. I was very impressed with these three shows-in-one: Ecobuild, Futurebuild and Cityscape. The event has grown considerably, doubling in size this year alone. The whole show was focused on sustainability and with 500 exhibitors there was plenty to demonstrate just how seriously the industry is taking the environmental challenges, including the drive towards zero carbon construction. Today sees the start of the first Apprenticeship Week, now set to become an annual event following the recommendations of the Apprenticeship Review ‘Expanding apprenticeships, developing world-class skills’ published at the end of last month. We have a special report for Buildingtalk from Eric Turner of Proskills who reviews the new production apprenticeship programme for Building Products. We all recognise that it is vital that there are improvements in training if we are to meet the skill challenges of the next decade. (more…)

Next month the 2008 Ideal Home Show will be celebrating 100 years of innovation and inspirational ideas for the home and garden when it opens at Earl’s Court in London. One of the highlights of the show will be an experimental Eco House specially designed to demonstrates how new homes can be zero carbon but still affordable. (more…)

Last week I was at a live fire demonstration organised by Rockwool and held at Wembley, in the shadow of the new stadium. Rockwool manufacture a range of non-combustible stone wool insulation solutions and these were pitted against a variety of alternative plastic and foam based insulation materials to compare their real fire performance. It was a truly impressive display, dramatically exposing the difference between the ‘non-combustible’ Rockwool material and others which are sold as ‘fire-safe’ insulation. (more…)
