The turmoil in the world financial institutions continues. On Friday, the Bank of England and other Central Banks announced massive financial help for the banking system - which has been seizing up because of fears of further bank collapses. As I write, the talks to agree the huge USD700bn bail-out of the US financial industry seem to have ended in a shouting match. I’m sure by the time you are reading this there will have been some kind of short term resolution among the politicians but it looks like a very rocky road ahead. (more…)

Will the vogue for ‘green’ buildings and building products be able to survive the current economic downturn? The logic for saying ‘no’ goes like this. Finances are more pinched; people become more interested in simple cost equations; and the motivation to look at more environmentally friendly options dissipates. Whatever the cost implication (good, bad or indifferent), issues like this are seen to just fade in the public perception among a tsunami of other worries. (more…)

In the 1980’s I lived for while in Vancouver, Canada. It is a beautiful city and among the first in the world to pledge to become carbon neutral, that is, to balance the amount of greenhouse gases it emits through industry and other human activities with the amount of greenhouse gases it eliminates.
