Last week, Alistair Darling, the UK Chancellor, revealed his plans to head off a long-lasting recession in the UK. He said that ‘exceptional times required exceptional measures’, the very same sound bite excuse used by Guy Fawkes in 1605 when he tried to blow up Parliament to wipe out King James I and his entire government. Last week I was at a breakfast briefing at the opening of this years excellent Civils 2008 exhibition at Earls Court in London. Steven Norris, now Executive Chairman at Jarvis, gave a very entertaining and insightful overview of the major projects that will dominate the civil engineering scene over the next decade. (more…)

Rising unemployment has been centre stage again this week, including a report that the construction industry is experiencing the biggest increase in job losses in 20 years. Two thirds of new unemployment claims in some regions are from workers in the building trades. Perhaps this isn’t so surprising with construction accounting for approximately eight per cent of the UK’s GDP, and employing around 2.1 million people. (more…)
