Last week Gordon Brown, the UK Prime Minister, pledged that he will lift restrictions preventing councils from building more homes, possibly by allowing more of them to set up construction companies or providing short term finance for stalled public-private building programmes. Last year only 375 council houses were built despite the fact that we now have 4.5 million people on waiting lists for social housing, an all time high. With house building at its lowest level since 1924, here is a very positive contribution that Government can make. Maybe they will divert some of our cash destined for the banks that some say have been insolvent for years. (more…)

Last week I was at the BAU in Munich, Europe’s key trade fair for building materials and systems for industrial, commercial and residential construction. Every two years, it brings together all the industry’s market leaders. It is an enormous event with well over 200k visitors, with over 2,000 exhibitors from over 40 countries filling 17 trade halls spread over 180,000 sqm. (more…)
