Interest from home-buyers starts to gain momentum

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) reported last week that interest from home-buyers is starting to gain ‘real momentum’, although sales remain low. New inquiries in the housing market rose for the fifth consecutive month in March. There was increased optimism that sales would pick up during the year, but it remained tough for first-time buyers. The Bank of England reported that mortgage approvals for house purchases are rising. All this led to renewed talk of ‘green shoots’, though most agree that there is a long way to go. (more…)

‘Get Britain Building’ campaign calls for 10 key changes

I was taken to task last week after reporting on the rise in the number of unemployed architects. It was pointed out to me that with just 150 of the 25,000 UK architects out of work last year, only 0.6% of the total, this was an incredibly low number. The rise this year, given that low starting point, looks dramatic, but still means only 5% of architects are looking for work, well below the current UK unemployment rate of 6.3%. So that’s the full statistics but behind these are anxious times for many individuals. We wish them well in their search for work. (more…)
