We continue to get conflicting signs about the state of the economy. The UK economy contracted between April and June at more than double the figure economists had expected, even though we saw a big jump in retail sales in June. The annual rate of decline is now the worst since since records began in 1955. (more…)

Lyndon White, Managing Editor, writes:The recent fire in a block of flats in Camberwell, south London, killed six people and made a couple of hundred more homeless. A general media consensus appears to be that the design of Lakanal House, with its single central stairwell, was a factor impeding the rescue of those who died. (more…)

Though the construction sector shrank for the sixteenth consecutive month in June, according to the CIPS/Markit Construction Purchasing Managers Index, David Noble, chief executive officer at the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, said “The sector is in better shape than at the start of the year. Moreover, though purchasing managers say current contracts are drying up and the new business horizon looks sparse, they are still resolute that wider economic recovery will materialise over the coming twelve months”.
