Bad architecture wins ‘Carbuncle Cup’

I hope you all enjoyed the Bank Holiday despite the travel chaos of 20 miles of M5 traffic gridlock, 5 hours of M25 delays, aircraft refuel workers strike at Manchester Airport and major railway engineering work between London and Birmingham. All that was missing in some parts of the south of England was the rain. Having said that, I enjoyed the great atmosphere of the Notting Hill Carnival in west London, joining in with over a million people at Europe’s biggest street party, though getting there was problematic due to nearby train station closures. How we can reduce the cost of warm air?

We begin Buildingtalk this week with a great article from George Scragg, Tremco illbuck’s house building business development manager, who takes a closer look at how we can reduce the cost of warm air. I think he is right on the money when he looks at the Code for Sustainable Homes, which had promised so much and many doubted if it would fair any better than the failed EcoHomes Assessment that it replaced. UK builds the smallest homes in Europe

New build homes in the UK are notorious for being so small that they are proving to be a danger when swinging cats. There just isn’t room. I’ve seen new flats in London that are too small to accommodate a reasonable size sofa from IKEA. The UK builds the smallest homes in Europe and complaints from buyers hit the news last week with RIBA calling for all new-build housing to be built to minimum space standards. (more…)

Gas Safe doesn’t mean Plumb Safe

Following last week’s feature on CORGI rising like a phoenix from the ashes after losing out to Capita for the new Gas Safe registration, we had an email from Blane Judd, Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) making the point that Gas Safe doesn’t mean Plumb Safe. For many years I lived in Basingstoke in Hampshire running a business focused on providing marketing material for the construction industry. I would travel all over the UK visiting companies large and small, helping them upgrade their literature, write better sales letters and advise on spending their marketing budgets more effectively.
