Mixed news in the industry last week. A report by Glenigan showed that the value of building projects starts in the education sector has doubled year on year to almost ?1 billion. Allan Wilen, Economics Director at Glenigan, says: “The government has shifted its education focus from refurbishment to providing ‘modern learning environments’ through the BSF scheme. While other sectors are declining consistently education remains at historically high levels”. (more…)

I have been asked to comment on changes in web searching. This was prompted in part by the recent publicity about Microsoft’s new Bing search engine which, among other options, lets users sort through popular search categories, using pictures. Finding information by scanning images is reckoned to be much quicker than trying to read through summaries, however brief. (more…)

Pete Baxter of Autodesk has contributed a great article to this week’s Buildingtalk, explaining why he believes sustainability will be the key dynamic in architecture over the next decade. He identifies changes in legislation as just one factor. For example, the EU’s Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) is having a major impact right across the construction industry throughout Europe. (more…)

The UK Government has set the goal of reaching ‘Zero Carbon’ by 2060. It introduced the Code for Sustainable Homes (CfSH) in April 2007 as a significant aspect of its strategy to achieve this, not least because the 21 million homes in the UK are responsible for 27% of CO2 emissions, and homes built from today onwards will represent one-third of the total housing stock by 2060.
