BriggsAmasco membrane for innovative 360° solar roof

Briggs Amasco

Sarnafil White SR (Solar Reflective) membrane

Highly reflective single ply membrane from BriggsAmasco completes a solar PV roofing installation capable of harvesting 360° of sunlight at Banff and Buchan College in Fraserburgh, Scotland.

Leading waterproofing and roofing specialist, BriggsAmasco has installed 2,500m2 of a highly reflective single ply membrane to complete an innovative solar PV roofing installation capable of harvesting 360° of sunlight, as part of a £20 million refurbishment of Banff and Buchan College.

Architects CDA placed sustainability high on the agenda – working with the college to reduce its carbon footprint and running costs.

Following specification of the solar roofing system, which used cylindrical solar modules to be installed by Renewable Resources Energy Solutions Limited, the project required a highly reflective roofing membrane to ensure that the maximum amount of power could be generated at all times.

As well as the need to maximise the roof’s potential to generate power, the building’s remote Aberdeenshire location required a single ply application that would guarantee long term performance and protection from wind uplift.

Sarnafil’s White SR (Solar Reflective) membrane was specified because:

  • the single ply membrane with the highest CIGS solar reflectance factor on the market,
  • achieves a staggering 95%
  • helps optimise the performance of the cylindrical solar PV system

Sarnafil registered contractor BriggsAmasco appointed to complete the application.

With the combination of reflective membranes and the solar system, the new roof is expected to generate around 16,000kWh of energy each year.

Offering speed and ease of application, with additional health and safety benefits as there is no need for hot works, the single ply membrane provided the college with an efficient and cost-effective roofing solution.

British Board of Agrément (BBA) certified to have a life expectancy ‘in excess of 40 years’, the membrane will provide outstanding performance for many years to come.

For several of the new wing’s additional roofs, BriggsAmasco also installed the hot air weldable Sarnafil S327-18EL in light grey.

This completed the high performance, long term waterproofing application that ensures the college, staff and students will remain protected from the elements whilst also benefiting from the power generated by a highly innovative roofing application.
