Catnic Lintels chosen for railway housing rebuild

The reconstruction of the Newton Thorpe Cottages site is being carried out on behalf of the affordable housing provider by Yuill Homes, while Gammond Evans Chrichton is the architectural practice leading the project.

Initially Yuill Homes is constructing a new block of apartments with eight dwellings on both the ground and first floor.

Once they are completed, the existing properties will be demolished and a further 10 bungalows erected in their place using traditional methods.

The Project Technologist for Gammond Evans Crichton , Mr Charles Andrews, comments: “The new flats and houses are being built for the Railway Housing Association which manages a lot of property and for whom we have done several projects in the past.

This is an interesting scheme given the replacement of existing dwellings prior to their demolition, and presents a mix of external treatments including two types of facing brick, areas of render and a curving green roof on the two storey flats.

’As to the wall construction, the external skin for the flats varies somewhat but the bungalows will have a 343 mm wall zone, including a 140 mm insulated cavity.
