Catnic Lintels chosen for railway housing rebuild

Catnic Lintels
Redevelopment by The Railway Housing Association includes Catnic Lintels which were specified for their corrosion resistance, thermal insulation value and all round physical performance.
The reconstruction of the Newton Thorpe Cottages site is being carried out on behalf of the affordable housing provider by Yuill Homes, while Gammond Evans Chrichton is the architectural practice leading the project.
Initially Yuill Homes is constructing a new block of apartments with eight dwellings on both the ground and first floor.
Once they are completed, the existing properties will be demolished and a further 10 bungalows erected in their place using traditional methods.
The Project Technologist for Gammond Evans Crichton , Mr Charles Andrews, comments: “The new flats and houses are being built for the Railway Housing Association which manages a lot of property and for whom we have done several projects in the past.
This is an interesting scheme given the replacement of existing dwellings prior to their demolition, and presents a mix of external treatments including two types of facing brick, areas of render and a curving green roof on the two storey flats.
’As to the wall construction, the external skin for the flats varies somewhat but the bungalows will have a 343 mm wall zone, including a 140 mm insulated cavity.
Although we have used Catnic Lintels countless times in the past it was essential that we comply with accredited details including the value of thermal resistance through the steel - requiring a specific thermal insulation value - and then also the life expectancy’.
Not only are Catnic lintels manufactured from hot-dipped galvanized steel, for the unique Duplex corrosion protection, a coating of thermal setting polyester powder is applied by an electrostatic process.
High temperature curing then produces a tough durable surface to enable the product to be highly resistant to impact, abrasion and other damage; which facilitates ease of on-site handling.
All of Catnic’s lintels have gained the approval of the regulatory authorities both in the domestic and international market assuring designers, specifiers and builders regarding the high quality of the product.
In addition to this, they are designed, manufactured and tested in accordance with BS EN 845-2:2003 and are certified by the British Board of Agrement.
Specifiers are assured of free technical support when selecting the right lintels for their project.
The Catnic Lintel Advanced Scheduling System (CLASS) is the most comprehensive lintel scheduling service available.
Working together from one concise document ensures there is no room for error in the sizing, loading and tolerance of the lintels required.
By working closely with specifiers and merchants CLASS clearly provides a description of each lintel including its location, price and delivery time; guaranteed structural adequacy and a site summary.
All that is required to benefit from the CLASS approach to lintel scheduling is a set of project drawings.
