Sika makes an impact at Manchester Metropolitan University

Sika concrete admixtures

Sika concrete admixtures were incorporated in the concrete mix for the production of black precast concrete panels for the new Business School and Student Hub building at the university.

The precast concrete panels were produced by Thorp Precast.

As the panels were a prominent aesthetic feature of the structure, a good surface finish was essential.

Incorporating the Sika admixtures in the mix helped to reduce efflorescence and the number of blow holes within the finished panels.

This is turn greatly reduced wastage and the amount of finishing required.

The concrete was also designed to self compact, which eliminated the need for noisy vibration of the panel moulds in order to mechanically compact.

The £75 million building, constructed by Sir Robert McAlpine, and designed by award winning Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, has been shortlisted for “Project of the Year’ in the 2012 Building awards.
