Alsop Sparch commended at Structural Awards
Alsop Sparch
Chips major development
Chips, the first major development for New Islington in Manchester designed by Alsop Sparch, has been commended in the Institution of Structural Engineers international awards.
Commissioned by Urban Splash, Chips comprises the first new apartments for sale in New Islington and gets its name from its inspiration; three fat chips piled on top of one another.
The building features three equal-height, long, thin new build masses stacked upon one another.
This design creates an elevated ground floor and eight levels comprising 142 one, two and three bedroom apartments.
The scheme achieves a BREEAM Eco-Homes Excellent rating, conforms to the Manchester Methodist Housing Trust scheme's development standards and meets the sustainability guidelines as set out by the UK Homes and Communities agency as apart of the 'millennium community programme.
The Structural Awards acknowledges and rewards the work of the world's most talented structural designers, their contribution to the built environment and showcases projects that lead the industry's development.
Chips has previously been presented with a 2010 RIBA Regional Award (North West).
