DLG proposes transformation of Leeds landmark

Sensitive transformation
DLG Architects has proposed designs to sensitively transform the former Majestic nightclub in Leeds city centre.
Recent planning approval will secure the redevelopment of the listed building which sits in City Square opposite the busy railway station.
The building features 21m diameter dome, was most recently operated as the Majestyk nightclub until its closure in 2006.
It originally opened in the 1920s as a cinema, with a basement restaurant.
The cinema closed in 1969 and became a bingo hall, which eventually closed and made way for Majestic.
On behalf of owner, Leeds based property company Rushbond, which bought the building in 2010, DLG prepared designs to sensitively transform the building for a new leisure destination.
The plans include new openings to the external facade and new windows to let in more natural light into the building.
Plans also allow for the flat roof, overlooking City Square, to become usable as a terrace.
The canopy over the main entrance will be replaced and the external fabric will be enhanced with new urns and statues in keeping with the buildings original form.
Works on the project will start next month with completion expected by Autumn this year.
