Improving access for all at The Malls
Changing Places toilet, Clos-o-Mat Palma ‘wash and dry’ toilet
To improve toilet facilities, an accessible Changing Places toilet has been installed The Malls shopping centre as part of an upgrade by Basingstoke & Dean Borough Council.
Disabled toilet provider, Total Hygiene - sponsor of the Changing Places campaign - designed and installed the Changing Places toilet.
A Changing Places toilet is larger than a conventional accessible toilet.
It is designed to cater for those with profound and multiple learning disabilities and other severe disabilities who need the help of at least one carer.
It features a peninsular toilet, changing bench and hoist as standard.
The Council also specified the inclusion of a Clos-o-Mat Palma ‘wash and dry’ toilet, with a touch sensitive hand switch and soft seat.
The Clos-o-Mat looks like a traditional toilet, but has an integral douche and drier to eliminate the need for a user or carer to manually cleanse after toileting.
Birmingham’s Cadbury World is benefiting from the installation of a Clos-o-Mat Changing Places toilet. The facility has been installed to offer accessibility to all visitors and includes a height adjustable, adult sized changing bench, height adjustable wash basin, Clos-o-Mat wash and dry automatic toilet and a hoist. The inclusion of a Changing Places toilet is good practice under BS 8300 and ensures Document M compliance.
Clos-o-Mat has helped to optimise inclusivity at Oldham’s £26m Oasis Academy with the inclusion of a hygiene room. The hygiene room caters for the personal needs of those who are unable to use a conventional toilet and is located next to the Academy’s learning support department. It features a toilet, washbasin, mobile, height adjustable changing bench, host and privacy screen and is large enough to accommodate both a wheelchair and a carer.
Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre (NEC) now boasts a new Changing Places accessible toilet located in the main Hall 20 Atrium.
Clos-o-Mat is reporting that growing numbers of educational establishments are installing hygiene rooms with some schools noting how the inclusion of such a facility increases attendance requests.
Total Hygiene, manufacturer of the Clos-oMat wash and dry toilet, has provided a Changing Places toilet facility for Apex House in Leicester.
