The Open Systems business of Birmingham-based Inviron Limited is installing an advanced integrated building system in the new Sandwell and West Birmingham Ambulatory Care Centre, which is likely to bring considerable long-term payback to the NHS in terms of functionality and freedom from single manufacturer 'lock-ins.' Inviron, formerly ABB Building Systems, is on schedule to have the system fully operational for October this year, having commenced work on the contract in October 03 on behalf of contractor Crown House, part of Carillion plc The integrated building system, which will control a wide range of systems including BMS, nurse-call, door access, CCTV and medical gas alarms, uses a common 'Open Systems' technology

New HVAC Automation Provides Seamless Connectivity
ABB's drives for the HVAC sector are now supported by software drivers for the Compass protocol conversion system, from North Communications.
By using Open Systems technology, key building sub-systems within the Centre can be procured from multiple manufacturers and easily integrated into a single smart building system.
Unlike 'closed' or proprietary control systems that limit choice, add complexity, resist expansion, and perpetuate high costs, Open Systems offer greater flexibility, easier management, higher levels of scalability, and lower whole-life costs.
All Open Systems installed by Inviron use the LonMark standard for control networks, which is recognised as a de-facto standard for control networks in all facets of the building controls industry.
Examples of LON standard installations within UK healthcare facilities are numerous, having been incorporated on a number of PFI projects as well as some smaller and older NHS facilities.
Chris Butchart, General Manager of Inviron Open Systems and Chairman of LonUsers United Kingdom (formally the UK Open Systems Association) comments: 'The use of an open system configuration has allowed the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust to free itself from 'lock-ins' and given the estate's team the flexibility and freedom to implement self-diagnostic and remote monitoring functionality which would have been difficult to achieve with stand-alone proprietary systems.' The Sandwell and West Birmingham Ambulatory Care Centre is scheduled for completion later in the year.
It will provide rapid access to fast-track diagnosis and treatment within the NHS, and increase efficiency and quality of the NHS through more effective use of resources, while minimising hospital visits and waiting times.
