The 'fast-track' contract to refurbish a Wrexham High School represented a major challenge for the two key contractors because the work had to be completed during the school summer vacation.

Hundreds of schoolchildren in Wrexham, North Wales, are starting the 2004/2005 academic year in a new, state-of-the-art learning environment - thanks to a major investment by Wrexham County Borough Council on the refurbishment of Rhosnesni High School and the exceptional skill and co-operation demonstrated by builder Birse Construction and M and E contractor Inviron Limited The 'fast-track' contract to refurbish the High School represented a major challenge for the two key contractors because the work had to be completed in time for the school to be re-furnished and stocked during the school summer vacation

The new school, which opened on 6 September and will eventually accommodate around 1200 pupils, boasts an unrivalled list of new facilities including indoor heated swimming pool; extensive IT and technology centres; purpose-built drama area; indoor gymnasium, and outdoor floodlit sports areas.

Rhosnesni's Headteacher Bernard Knowles comments: 'These are exciting times for both staff and pupils alike.

A lot of hard work has gone into the Rhosnesni refurbishment, both by contractors and school staff, but it has been worth it.

This school is now one of the finest learning platforms in North Wales if not the country, ready to equip and empower our pupils for the challenges of the future.' The Rhosnesni initiative is part of a much larger project, which involved the closure of Wrexham town centre high schools: Bryn Offa, The Groves and St David's, and the refurbishment of the old Bryn Offa site.

That will house Ysgol Clywedog serving the west of Wrexham, and is due for completion in the New Year and Rhosnesni High School serving the east of Wrexham.

Birmingham-based Inviron, responsible for the mechanical services phase of the contract, provided drainage plus all key elements of air-conditioning facilities (chilled water; comfort cooling; ductwork; thermal insulation).

In addition Inviron was responsible for the computer-controlled Building Management System (BMS); domestic hot and cold water; heating and ventilation, and swimming pool ventilation.

The company also provided the electrical systems including: low-voltage (LV) switchboards, low-voltage distribution; main sub/main cables; emergency lighting; small power sockets; fire alarms; external lighting; structured wiring (voice and data); CCTV; induction loop and public address system.

Inviron was awarded the new build and major refurbishment partnering negotiated contract following a successful presentation to main contractor Birse Construction on behalf of end client Wrexham County Borough Council, the work encompassing all design and financial elements of the M and E programme.

The contract officially started in September 2003.

Inviron Operations Manager Eddie Marginson comments: 'This contract reflects especially well on Inviron because it demonstrates not only our ability to complete on time and to cost, but also our ability to work in an open-book manner, with everything visible.

There were agreed margins and all financial and design aspects were audited and document-tracked.'.
