New CIPD headquarters build

An Inviron product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Mar 7, 2005

Inviron Limited has completed a large contract for mechanical and electrical services installation work on new HQ for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), based in Wimbledon.

The Docklands office of UK-wide building systems concern Inviron Limited has completed a GBP2.2 million contract for mechanical and electrical services installation work on new headquarters for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), based in Wimbledon.

Inviron, working closely with consultants Rybka Battle, main contractor YJL Construction and GMW Architects, carried out all mechanical and electrical services including lighting, power, heating and air conditioning.

Other work included the construction of an electrical sub-station which not only serves the CIPD headquarters but also local infrastructure; and the design and installation of fire alarm, building access and CCTV systems.

The focal point of the new building is a central atrium incorporating 5000 m2 of tiered office space over five floors, enhanced by a fully glazed, bowed frontage; and specialist, energy-efficient, lighting systems.

The open plan style of the building complements cross-functional working, with provision having been made for increased meeting space and a new library.

Energy conservation was a key part of the design brief and the building incorporates a number of energy-efficient systems.

One of which is the roof-mounted solar powered cell system, supplied and installed by Inviron, which acts as a supplementary source of hot water heating.

Office workstations are illuminated by 'gull wing' lighting systems equipped with passive infrared (PIR) sensors, which switch power off after 15 minutes of inactivity; While the majority of supplementary and feature lighting systems, such as walkway areas, are operated by dusk-to-dawn, photo-electric cells.

Even 'used' heat is not wasted, but recycled to maximise energy efficiency.

The air conditioning system incorporates a 'thermal wheel' heat scavenge apparatus to draw heat from the air efflux immediately before it discharges the building.

It is then recycled and mixed with freshly heated air.

Inviron's project manager, Bob Wilson, comments: "Inviron is very proud to be associated with the build of the new CIPD headquarters".

"Completed over a 12-month timeframe, the M and E fit-out has been both extremely challenging yet very satisfying".

"The finished building is not only an absolute state-of-the-art working environment enhanced by the very latest in energy conservation technology, but a work-of-art that will grace Wimbledon for many, many years to come.

Complementing its M and E work, Inviron Facilities Management and Service has been awarded a contract for planned preventative maintenance of mechanical and electrical systems, and small works M and E, for the headquarters.
