Medeco Makes Greenwich University
Students Safer

When Hyde Housing Association Ltd (Hyde), London, decided to replace the locks on the two year old Cutty Sark hall of residence, they chose Medeco Biaxial cylinders provided by A1Seecure The installation of 300 cylinders on a master key system was completed six months ago, and has vastly improved security and access control in the residences

The buildings that make up the student accommodation at the University of Greenwich are owned, managed and leased to the University by Hyde and are included as part of the Council-driven regeneration of the Greenwich area, one of the largest projects in the UK.

Hyde regularly enlists A1Seecure to provide locks and master keying systems, and specified Medeco Biaxial cylinders after successful use of the system in another hall of residence.

The previous cylinder system had proved unable to withstand the pressures of high traffic use due to the number of students frequently entering and exiting the buildings and the keys often snapped.

This not only proved costly, but also time consuming, as the system provider required advance warning of one week to reproduce the keys.

The decision was therefore taken to replace the entire system with one that was considerably more robust and secure.

"Obviously, student halls of residence are subjected to a lot of use, so hardwearing keys and locks were essential." Says Richard Austen of Hyde "Another reason that we decided to replace the entire system was that there was only one supplier of the previous locks, quite a distance away, and they took too long to provide a replacement - which wasn't ideal when a resident snapped their key!" Another extremely important consideration when specifying the locking system for the halls of residence is the benefits of a master key system.

Cutty Sark halls consist of self-contained flats, each with separate, single bedrooms.

It is, therefore, necessary for each resident to be in possession of one key that opens the main entry door to the building stairwell area, as well as the front door of the flat and an individual bedroom, but no others.

Not only does the Medeco Biaxial system achieve this with one individual key per resident, but A1Seecure are the only Medeco Centre in the area with the ability to cut the keys.

This provides extra peace of mind, as only the correct authorisation will allow new keys to be cut, and replacement keys can be provided on short notice if one is broken or damaged.

In addition, the Building and Estates managers must hold a master key that is capable of opening every door in the building, for security and emergency purposes.

Domestic staff must be able to access only the communal areas of the blocks and individual flats; with the old system the domestic keys could also be used to access bedrooms.

The new Medeco system provides a set of master keys that gives these varying levels of access to the right people.

"Since the installation of the new locks, we have had far fewer problems with broken keys," continues Richard, "which has saved us both time and money. Request a free brochure from Abloy UK ...

The residents and their parents are also much happier with the new security in place.".
