Halfords strengthens security with Abloy

When Halfords, the UK's leading retailer of car accessories and bicycles, embarked on a major programme of rebranding it took the opportunity for a complete review of its in-store security.

When Halfords, the UK's leading retailer of car accessories and bicycles, embarked on a major programme of rebranding it took the opportunity for a complete review of its in-store security The company's goal was to make it easier for customers to see, inspect and purchase products, while improving still further the level of protection against theft or malicious damage

With over 350 stores nationwide and a range in excess of 11,000 product lines, Halfords had an important decision to make regarding its security.

"We're now stocking more desirable, higher-value products, which need to be displayed more securely," explains Campbell Heart, Regional Security Manager at Halfords, "But we also need to enhance the way we're displaying them and move away from the locks and chains that we traditionally used".

The size and layout of the redesigned Halfords retail outlets require a variety of staff with different levels of access and authority and responsibility for a wide range of departments.

In the past, this meant that staff each had numerous keys for display cabinets and counters, making the tracking of keys extremely difficult.

Halfords took the opportunity to address all of these problems simultaneously while rebranding its stores.

Campbell explains that an important element of this process has been the introduction of glass cabinet displays incorporating ABLOY EXEC cylinder mechanisms and locks.

These were supplied by Southern Stronghold, Coventry and have been specially developed for use with sliding and hinged glass doors, as well as timber and MDF storage cabinets.

"We use glass display cases incorporating the highly secure but discreet OF403 push locks and CL104 cam locks with the ABLOY EXEC system", explains Campbell.

He also points out that the new Abloy Security locks and associated fitting products have already triggered a response.

"Customers noticed the change immediately and are less aware of the security".

"Before, customers would see the security before they would see the display".

The change in security methods also gave Halfords an opportunity to review its key management process and the company now standardises on Abloy Security's fully patented ABLOY EXEC cylinder mechanism, which features a disc-steering system and strict key registration.

Campbell says ABLOY EXEC met all of the company's requirements: "We initially set out a number of desired specifications based on durability and strength, then looked at how the locks would be used and the ability to replace lost keys and barrels".

ABLOY EXEC is the latest one-way mechanism, giving a smoother and more reliable operation due to the disc steering system which ensures that the locks open smoothly each time.

EXEC keys are symmetrical and double sided, meaning that key entry is significantly easier than with traditional one-sided keys.

These features allow Halfords' staff to serve customers efficiently and, perhaps as importantly, to relock the cabinets easily.

In addition, the master keying possibilities available with ABLOY EXEC enables Halfords to control staff access privileges within stores, so that staff who require access to more than one cabinet or store can do so via a single 'personalised' key.

The Store Manager, for example, can access all areas, whereas staff responsible for one specific department, such as in-car entertainment, can open only the relevant displays.

A patent on both the cylinder mechanism and key, valid until 2014, ensures that keys cannot be copied.

ABLOY also offers a choice of three key registration levels depending on the degree of security required, all of which ensure that duplicate keys cannot be cut without the correct authorisation: Red level keys are only available from Abloy Security , who record the registration details.

White level additional keys are only available from the ABLOY EXEC Centre that issued the original suite of keys, and registration details are retained at the Centre to allow quick availability while being fully protected; and Blue level which is only for individual locks and is provided with a key card which must be produced at any ABLOY EXEC Centre or Abloy Security in order to obtain additional keys.

Southern Stronghold manages this procedure and maintains a secure database that holds store specific records.

This was particularly appealing to Halfords, as it has outlets up and down the country. Request a free brochure from Abloy UK ...

Campbell concludes, "With ABLOY EXEC we have the ability to display brand leading and high value products securely using a system that can be expanded to suit future requirements, throughout the company.".
