Abloy protects network switch systems

An Abloy UK product story

Abloy Disklock Pro cylinder locks and padlocks are being used throughout the UK by converged communications provider Kingston Communications to protect its essential telecommunications and network switch systems.

Providing exceptional levels of security, often in areas with high rates of crime and criminal damage, Disklock Pro locking products form a critical part of Kingston's ongoing programme to rationalise and enhance security across more than 200 sites.

Kingston Communications provides secure voice, data, video, mobile, wireless and storage solutions to businesses and public sector organisations throughout the UK.

Although the company's sites in the UK include a number of headquarters and regional office buildings, the majority house local telecommunications and network exchanges and systems.

These are often located in areas that are easy for the public to access and are prime targets for vandals and other criminals.

As Carl Fothergill, Kingston's site security executive points out: "It's important to understand that many of these systems control the voice and data networks for banks, businesses and the general public, so they have to be secure to prevent both malicious damage and planned sabotage from occurring".

Abloy Security's lock systems are used to provide an effective, and in many instances, highly visible level of deterrent.

In particular, the Disklock Pro cylinder mechanisms used in Abloy padlocks and door locks are virtually pickproof and are constructed so that they are almost impossible to drill.

Abloy padlocks are designed far more robust and reliable than conventional spring and pin mechanisms.

In using the Disklock Pro mechanism within the Abloy padlocks, Kingston is able to operate a sophisticated master key arrangement.

Thus, the company can easily control both the distribution of keys and access to individual sites.

Carl Fothergill adds: "With almost two billion possible key combinations, the advantages of the master key system are considerable".

"Combined with the inherent strength and reliability of the Disklock Pro products, for example Abloy Security's padlocks use case-hardened boron steel shackles, which has enabled us to improve significantly the levels of security at all our sites, while reducing maintenance and other on-site repair costs".
