Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Sep 2, 2009

Abloy UK has supplied an access-control system featuring online and offline wall readers for a residential extra-care development in Cheshire.

The Smartair access-control solution was installed in partnership with Chubb Fire and Security and Mitie, and includes individual locksets on all apartment doors and selected internal doors.

Online Update On Card (UOC) and offline wall readers control access into residential and gated areas.

Each resident has a personal programmed Mifare RFID keyfob for access to their apartment and other parts of the development.

Door security and access information is managed from a central PC.

Residents can exit Smartair-controlled doors using an internal lever handle and via a portable programming unit supplied as part of the software-management kit if emergency access is required.

Each door has a battery-powered intelligent lock set with built-in proximity reader, which identifies the user's key fob, interrogates access rights and opens the lock or denies access accordingly.

The electric locking system requires no cabling or external electronics.

This contactless form of access control maintains the traffic flow and offers cost effectiveness due to minimal maintenance requirements and no wear and tear on the key fob.
