Acheson and Glover's wall system for sports stand

An Acheson and Glover product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Feb 24, 2010

Acheson and Glover has designed a hockey pitch and stand, featuring retaining walls for three tiered levels instead of traditional precast concrete terracing and steps.

The grand stand in Cookstown accommodates up to 2,000 people, and was completed in less than five weeks.

The stand provides unrestricted viewing across the new water-based pitch.

Flood lighting is set behind the spectators , providing a vantage point from all angles.

The spectator area was created solely using Acheson and Glover products.

As well as being a practical and economical alternative to traditional terracing, the dry stack blocks have a natural stone appearance and fit well into the natural landscape.

The stand area leads into a greenfield site so the use of concrete would not have looked right.

The problem with traditional stands is there is not enough height in between the levels.

An 1.5m high wall and a 400mm rise between the tiers, means that spectators don't miss any of the action on the pitch.

The Acheson and Glover design, part of an overall hockey club upgrade.

Raymond Gilmour, technical consultant, Acheson and Glover said the design for the tiered stand was developed from the company's use of a tiered walling system in landscaped gardens.
