London Hilton Saves 30% In Energy Spend

The London Hilton on Park Lane has recently benefited from the results of an energy efficiency audit by AEC.

Initial indications show that AEC will have helped the Hilton make an annual gas saving of at least 30%, on heating and DHW (Domestic Hot Water) at the hotel.

The initial site survey indicated strong potential for making energy savings.

AEC identified a number of situations where there was room for improvement in plant control strategy, without affecting the high levels of building services required at the hotel.

As a result, AEC was able to identify savings in both energy spend and CO2 emissions, resulting in dual financial and environmental benefits for the hotel.

As a result of gaining a greater understanding of the demands for heat on the system, AEC was able to demand sequence the boilers supplying both heating services and domestic hot water.

Analysis of the changes in gas consumption has revealed that over 30% savings have been achieved across all the boiler plant at the site.

In addition, the improved control regime should lead to a reduction in plant maintenance, which will further increase the benefits of an efficient controls strategy.

These results were achieved solely through software amendments, which results in costs being kept low and a quick payback time.

The London Hilton on Park Lane is a good example of what can be achieved in other hotels by forward thinking energy departments.

"We are committed to the environmental principles of energy management and continually look to minimise our energy consumption by the introduction of effective control systems," said Ray Coombes, regional facilities manager for Hilton Hotels in London.

"We are always looking into new ways to improve the system which is constantly evolving as needs change.

So impressed with the savings made at the London Hilton on Park Lane and in other hotels where AEC has been invited to work, AEC is already looking at a number of other Hilton sites, both in the UK and Europe.

"In reality, what we found here at Park Lane is similar to what we find in many commercial buildings," said Julian Miller, director of AEC.

"Heating, ventilation and chilling is not controlled to meet demand, which leads to wasted energy and money.
