Wilderness Peninsula gets a road
makeover
The last wilderness area in Great Britain, the Knoydart Peninsula, has had a road makeover courtesy of Aggregate Industries business, Bardon Contracting.
As the Peninsula is only accessible by boat or a 20 mile hike on foot, Bardon Contracting opted to transfer all materials and equipment, including asphalt, paver, dumpers, tractors and vans, by barge Two barges were contracted, each doing four return trips a day over a two week period

New guide to sustainable solutions
Aggregate Industries' new sustainable product brochure is now available.
Bardon Contracting was appointed by Highland Council to clean, regulate and overlay the Knoydart Peninsula's existing road structure.
Resurfacing three kilometres of single track road, the company used 1250 tonnes of 14 mm close graded wearing course from Bardon Aggregates' Mid Lairgs quarry in Inverness.
Forbes Fraser, Highland Council engineer, says, "This was the first time any contractor had attempted to lay this amount of hot bituminous material on the Peninsula; all the previous overlays were done using deferred set Asphalts.
"Bardon Contracting rose to the challenge and gave a competitive price for this difficult undertaking.
The success of this contract very much depended on precise coordination of labour, plant and materials, together with working well with the local community".
Letters and feedback from the local community praised the team for their efficiency and consideration whilst the works were in progress.
The Peninsula is managed by the Knoydart Foundation - a partnership of the local community, the Highland Council, the John Muir Trust, Kilchoan Estate and the Chris Brasher Trust - guardian of over 17,000 acres of some of the wildest countryside Britain.
