Charcon, an Aggregate Industries business, presented Nottingham City Council with the Hard Landscaping Award at the 49th Civic Trust Awards.

Nottingham City Council received the award in this competitive category for its major regeneration project, Old Market Square It also won an Outstanding Contribution to the Public Realm award and a Special Regeneration award

The Old Market Square project preserves and maintains the city's oldest open space - known locally as Nottingham's guardian space.

The area is used as a place to rest and regain energy, to wait or to meet friends and is well used by people looking to be temporarily distracted from the routine of daily life.

It is also a major area for staging events and attractions.

The space connects many parts of the city and is a major pedestrian thoroughfare linking key city centre attractions and destinations.

Therefore, maintaining and utilising the space has always been vital to residents.

Designed to bring together light, water and texture, the style and aesthetics of the hard landscaping using a carefully selected palette of materials was an important factor in the selected scheme.

The Special Awards Sustainability Award, sponsored by Charcon's parent company, Aggregate Industries, was presented to the National Cold War Exhibition at RAF Museum Cosford, Shropshire, designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios.

The building provides a new controlled environment display hall for the museum's collection of historic aircraft with humidity managed using low energy conservation heating and ventilation.

Chris Hudson, Division Director responsible for Charcon said: "Charcon and Aggregate Industries are delighted to be associated with the Civic Trust again and Nottingham City Council and RAF Museum Cosford are worthy winners of their awards".

"The regeneration and improvement of both rural and metropolitan areas continues to be immensely important for the sense of well-being they can provide for both local residents and visitors".

"The Nottingham award is of special significance to Charcon as we aim to encourage attractive schemes that demonstrate a unique approach to hard landscaping, with a strong emphasis on innovative design".

Councillor Alan Clark, Portfolio holder for Neighbourhood Regeneration, said: "Old Market Square richly deserves its success at the Civic Trust Awards".

"We're really proud of its new look - it has surpassed our expectations in terms of its renewed popularity as a destination and its ability to stage large-scale events that were not previously possible".

"I expect it will become an important landmark, drawing interest from people around the country, and will play a part in Nottingham's ongoing regeneration".

The Civic Trust Awards recognise the very best in architecture, urban design, landscaping and public art, awarding projects of the highest quality design, which are judged to have made a positive contribution to the local environment and improve public places.
