North Cornwall 3 Phase Fire Safety Initiative
North Cornwall District Council has commenced a three phase initiative to install Ei160 series mains powered smoke alarms supplied by Aico Limited into all of its 3,500 properties.
"We have partner-type contracts with our gas service engineers," explains Mark England, Kerrier's Building Maintenance Manager.
"To save any confusion, it makes good sense to standardise on one type of smoke or CO alarm.
Everyone understands where they are across all contracts.

Tenants go for mains powered smoke alarms
New wireless technology helps overcome tenant resistance to mains powered smoke alarms.
You also have the advantage of dealing with one supplier, consistent servicing and so on.
"We particularly liked the 10 year plus Lithium cell back-up technology offered by Aico's Ei160 and Ei261 Series," says Mark England.
"We looked at different makes and models.
The Ei160 Series just seemed to offer good performance and to do what we wanted it to do.
The same is true of the Ei261.
We liked the guarantee too." Kerrier was determined only to specify mains powered units throughout.
" We were exceptionally fortunate that the council from whom we inherited our housing stock didn't have much time for battery powered units either.
Tenants removing batteries can be a big problem and at least most properties are still covered by a mains powered system." Maintenance is carried out on existing smoke alarms every twelve months by contracted gas service engineers.
If a defective smoke or CO alarm is discovered, they are immediately replaced with a new Aico Ei smoke or CO alarm.
New alarms are also fitted during rewiring contracts and refurb work as required.
Ei166 optical- smoke alarms are used throughout.
In a typical two bedroom property one alarm is fitted upstairs and the other downstairs.
Both are interconnected and placed either on the lighting circuit or on their own dedicated circuit depending on whether the property is being rewired.
"As a responsible landlord, we have to do everything in our power to protect our tenants," says Mark England.
"That means installing whatever safety devices are necessary, as well as making our tenants aware of fire and CO safety issues through our regular tenant newsletter.
"We've all undergone gas safety training and we're thoroughly familiar with the dangers associated with open flued appliances.
That's why we put as much stress on CO safety as we do on fire.
Nowadays, as a responsible landlord, you've just got to do these things.".
