Aico , the UK's leading supplier of domestic smoke alarms, is calling for landlords to take a fresh look at the way they protect their tenants from fire, after worrying government statistics were published recently Fire Statistics, United Kingdom 2003 published by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister not only showed that around 75% of all fire deaths occurred in the home but that 81% of all fire injuries also occurred in the home

Worryingly, 2003's figures showed that fire deaths in the home were actually on the increase - and non-fatal injuries were 10% higher than in 1993.

"What these statistics undoubtedly tell us is that people are most vulnerable in the home environment," commented Neil Perdell of Aico.

"It's in the home that they need the greatest level of protection".

"Obviously any responsible landlord will strictly adhere to BS 5839 Part 6 Revision 2004.

Anything less would surely make them vulnerable under 'duty of care' should anything happen to a tenant.

"One of the surest ways in which landlords can improve protection is to ensure that all alarms are interconnected.

We recognise that this can be a very costly, disruptive and time-consuming exercise.

However, now that the 2004 revision makes provision for the use of wireless mains-powered interconnection rather than old-fashioned hard wiring, new wireless interconnect systems like Aico's RadioLINK can be installed very quickly and with the minimum of disruption.

"What's more, a wireless system can be reconfigured far more simply and economically when the needs of the tenants change - or when standards change.

Taking advantage of technological advances such as this not only upgrades protection and saves money but also makes it easier to comply with, for example, the BS 5839 Part 6 recommendation that a fire risk assessment is undertaken on all properties and systems altered to meet the needs of particular tenants.

"Keeping up with - and taking advantage of - the latest fire safety technology, like wireless interconnection, will allow landlords not only to offer better protection but to be more flexible to meet changing tenant needs and evolving standards.

The result should be fewer deaths, fewer injuries and safer tenants.".
