Orkney Islands Council has specified Ei RadioLINK wireless interconnect mains powered smoke and heat alarms from Aico

Orkney Islands Council has specified Ei RadioLINK wireless interconnect mains powered smoke and heat alarms from Aico for use in up to 400 properties where alarm replacements are due The council will be removing Aico Ei150 Series mains powered alarms which have reached the end of their ten year life, and taking the opportunity to put in place new Aico wireless interconnect technology which will offer them a number of unique ways in which they can further enhance tenant safety

"We were very happy with our experience using Aico Ei150 Series alarms," reports Graeme Christie, Chartered Surveyor in the Corporate Property Section of Orkney Islands Council.

"When it came to replacing our existing alarms, we naturally looked again at the market and identified Aico's new RadioLINK wireless interconnect technology as offering us a number of unique advantages." In the interests of their tenants, the Council was concerned to meet - and exceed - the new requirements of BS.5839.

Pt.6 (2004) and anticipate the impact of impending new Building Regulations, which meant that best practice for existing dwellings might well be to have extended coverage within a dwelling.

"We have an above average proportion of elderly tenants," explains Graeme Christie.

"Obviously, they are particularly vulnerable and require the highest standard of protection.

RadioLINK allows us to design systems to better meet individual tenant's needs." Available exclusively from Aico, RadioLINK technology interconnects smoke and heat alarms by radio signals, eliminating the need for hardwiring.

At the heart of the system is the Ei168 base unit, to which either Ei140 or Ei160 Series mains powered alarms can be connected.

Each dwelling has its own unique 'house coding' and alarms can be added to or removed from the system as tenant requirements change or new standards apply.

"We wanted to extend our coverage," says Graeme Christie.

"In a typical two storey property we wanted an optical alarm in both the upstairs and downstairs hallways, plus a heat alarm in the kitchen; naturally, all would be interconnected.

Such a system was much less messy and expensive to achieve with RadioLINK.

We also have 'difficult' properties in which hard wired interconnection is a particular problem which RadioLINK overcomes.

"Furthermore, if a tenant needed a Deaf Alarm, it would be particularly quick and simple to integrate into the RadioLINK system.

It's important for tenants to be able to test their alarms and to be able to silence any nuisance alarms.

With RadioLINK, we've been able to install a simple, battery-powered wireless Master Test and Hush switch accessory at a sensible height and in a convenient place where anyone can test and control their whole system safely".

Orkney Islands Council chose Aico Ei160 Series alarms for use with its RadioLINK technology, having been won over to ten year plus Lithium cell back-up when it first fitted the Ei150 range.

"With these special Lithium cells, you never have to worry about tenants removing them," says Graeme Christie.

"What's more, unlike conventional battery back-up, they're essentially maintenance free.

You fit the alarms and forget them." "The electricians found RadioLINK no problem at all to install," reports Graeme Christie.

"We timed the operation and we found that it took a two man team just 50 minutes to install a three alarm system plus Test and Hush Switch box, utilising existing power supplies.

It was certainly much quicker.".
