Aberdeenshire Council has announced a major new safety initiative utilising Aico's new Ei160RC mains-powered smoke alarms, RadioLINK technology and mains-powered Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms.

Aberdeenshire Council has announced a major new safety initiative to begin in January 2007 covering all of its 13,500 properties, utilising Aico's new Ei160RC mains-powered smoke alarms, RadioLINK technology and mains-powered Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms "As a council we are fully committed to meeting the Scottish Housing Quality Standard by the set date of 2015," says Councillor Anne Robertson, Chair of the Social Work and Housing Committee

"However, we intend to comply with the Health and Safety Section of the Standard five years in advance of target".

"As responsible landlords, tenant safety is of paramount importance to us in every respect".

"To that end, we want to deliver the very highest safety standards to our tenants as quickly as possible".

The needs of tenants in amenity housing is being prioritised, as many of the tenants are elderly or otherwise vulnerable.

Each tenant is being individually risk assessed to ensure that their precise safety needs are being met.

Here, the council has specified Aico's unique RadioLINK wireless interconnect technology with RC features.

The relay feature allows them to interface the system with a Tunstall Telecomm Lifeline 400 system, transmitting an alarm to a control centre.

At the same time, remote Aico wireless test and hushes switches can be fitted in a location and at a height suitable for the tenant".

"We've used Aico products for quite some time," says Aberdeenshire's Principal Policy Officer Dave Thomson".

"When this new initiative started, we looked at a number of solutions".

"Our management team chose Aico because of the flexibility and facilities offered by the RadioLINK system".

"We also liked the ease of installation that comes with wireless interconnect and the ten year plus Lithium cell technology on the EIi60RC alarms".

The council will be typically installing two alarms into a two storey property, with an optical RC unit downstairs and an ionisation RC unit upstairs.

Where necessary, other safety features such as Aico's Deaf Alarm will be used to ensure vulnerable tenants are properly protected.

Regular housing stock is being upgraded with Aico Ei160 mains powered alarms in the same configuration.

Old CO alarms are being replaced with new Aico mains-powered units.

Installation of the new home safety technology will be carried out on behalf of the council by leading electrical installers CLM of Warrington, who will be setting up a branch in Aberdeen specifically to handle the job.
