Alumasc Swistherm for new school building
Colourful new school building for Wolverhampton City Council is brightening the local area thanks to Alumasc's BBA approved Swistherm system.
The new five-storey sports centre was built on the foundations of the original 1960s centre and was designed to blend in with the surrounding architecture.
The top floors of the building house new residential accommodation for the College.
The Sports Centre and residential building is a new building adjacent to a listed 19th Century terrace set within a conservation area.
The brief demanded an insulated render system that would echo the period character of the College.
The M.R.Swistherm system specified on the project therefore incorporated extra strips of insulation to create feature bands on the walls.
The main purpose of the building is for sports activities, for these reasons 140mm Swistherm mineral wool insulation system was chosen as it offered excellent acoustic properties, a key requirement of the Architect.
Mineral wool is one of a range of sustainable insulation options available from Alumasc and is suitable for where a non-combustible facade is required.
It offers excellent thermal efficiency and helps to stabilise the building's structural fabric.
High performance M.R.ST Silkolitt silicone render was used as the external facing on the scheme, offering enhanced water shedding capability and resistance to surface dirt, making it ideal for the city location.
Like all Alumasc renders, Silkolit also has very low maintenance demands.
The system is available in 16 basic colours, which, when combined with lighter or darker options, offer 400 co-coordinated shades to suit any building style.
The Architects were Arup Associates, the installation of the render was completed by Purkiss Brothers and the main contractor was ISG Interior/Exterior.
