The existing brick-built properties were overclad with Swisslab, the company's traditional insulated render system, which provides levels of insulation far in excess of current Building Regulations specifications for external walls, eliminating condensation problems and resulting in lower heating bills for householders.

This ability to retrospectively apply high performance insulation solutions to existing housing stock that is structurally sound but thermally deficient makes Swisslab an obvious choice for urban regeneration programmes such as this.
The regeneration of the Tarling Estate scheme has been undertaken to achieve initiatives outlined by the government to improve all social housing according to Decent Homes standards by 2010.
The mixed refurbishment and newbuild scheme has been delivered for Tower Hamlets Community Housing, who now manage the affordable homes following the stock transfer from the local housing authority in December 2004.
The Tarling Estate development has also involved modern methods of construction, utilising new steel frame low cost homes.
Alumasc's Swisrail insulated render system was specified for this part of the development.
Specifically designed for new framing technology and building applications, Swisrail complies fully with NHBC guidelines by incorporating a 25mm cavity between the insulation and the frame.
Provided by a network of steel rail and channels, this ensures adequate drainage, whilst preserving the integrity of the insulated system by restricting free air movement.
A range of high-performing insulating materials is available: in this case polystyrene was specified and finished with ST Silkolitt rolled texture silicon render.
The completed project has dramatically transformed a previously drab urban streetscape into a bright and pleasant environment, creating greatly improved living conditions for householders and contributing towards a sense of civic pride within the community.
