Guernsey history helped by Alumasc

Specially commissioned cast iron rainwater systems from leading manufacturer, Alumasc, have added authentic detail to Guernsey's biggest ever heritage project.

The Market Place in St Peter Port is a major redevelopment of the Island's historic commercial centre, selected for restoration by The States of Guernsey - the island's administrative body It was essential to preserve the architectural sensitivity of the building whilst balancing the needs of retail/commercial users and their customers

One area which called for meticulous attention to detail was the existing cast-iron rainwater hoppers and downpipes.

These were of a non-standard design, and in order to exactly match new fittings with the originals, Alumasc was commissioned to manufacture parts to the identical pattern.

The company offers this specialist bespoke service, utilising traditional skills and techniques to replicate existing designs in their own foundries.

Alumasc's Apex range of cast iron rainwater goods provides a choice of sand-cast products from stock in four heritage profiles.

Half-round, ogee, beaded half-round and moulded gutters and round, square or rectangular downpipes with socketed joints are all available, along with complementary accessories.

They can be supplied primed or in a pre-coated satin black finish.

The Apex cast-iron components supplied have proven performance and are realistically expected to last in excess of 100 years, they are also low-maintenance and 100% recyclable.

Seamlessly integrating with other cast iron details within the complex, they contribute in no small measure to the imposing classical design of a building which, after 200 years, is still fulfilling its original role as the island's premier shopping space.

The project architects were Speakman Sayer and Partner of St.

Peter Port, in association with Seymour Harris Architecture of Birmingham.

The main contractor was Sir Robert McAlpine and the Alumasc approved sub-contractor, Salmon Plumbing. Request a free brochure from Alumasc Exterior Building Products ...
