ABB to provide 6.6kV and 230/400V infrastructure for the UK's highest living space.

ABB has been awarded the contract to provide a complete high voltage (HV) and low voltage (LV) power connection package for the new 48-storey Beetham Tower in Manchester, which is set to become the UK's highest living space at a height of 171m Modern 'sky-high' living demands a great deal of power - some 4 MVA for the Tower's 219 apartments and penthouses and four-star Hilton hotel

So Beetham Landmark Manchester has asked ABB to provide a complete turnkey connection package to ensure that power is available to meet a tight project schedule, ensuring that the building can be occupied at the earliest possible opportunity.

Over a four-month project, that started in August 2005, ABB will install the building's complete 6.6kV HV and 230/400V LV electrical distribution network, including a 1 MVA distribution transformer, as well as liaising directly with United Utilities to manage the smooth progress of the vital connection to the local power network.

In a separate contract, ABB is also providing a CHP (combined heat and power) scheme for the building.

About Beetham Tower, Manchester Designed by award winning Ian Simpson Architects, the development will feature a striking, slender glass tower and will be the tallest structure in the city centre at 157m high with a glass 'blade' increasing the height of the building to 171m.

The tower will feature a 285-bed hotel to be run by Hilton International.

As part of the development, Hilton will provide a destination 'sky bar' on the 23rd floor, which will be the first in the city and will offer magnificent views across Manchester, and beyond.
