AMEC has been appointed by Marks and Spencer to manage a multi-million pound programme to redevelop two stores in Liverpool and Edinburgh.

AMEC, the international project management and services company, has been appointed by Marks and Spencer to manage a multi-million pound programme to redevelop two stores in Liverpool and Edinburgh.

AMEC will carry out the redevelopment of the Marks and Spencer's Princes Street store in Edinburgh city centre.

This major development in a prime location requires refurbishment of the entire store together with major structural modifications, all undertaken while the store continues to trade.

Work will be completed by the end of 2007.

In Liverpool city centre, AMEC has been appointed to work with Marks and Spencer and its designers to produce optimum proposals for the redevelopment of the Church Street store, which will begin on site next year.

Behind the retained faandccedil;ade of the former hotel building, a carefully-managed, phased refurbishment programme will create a new Marks and Spencer flagship store in time to celebrate the city's status as European Capital of Culture in 2008.

"We are delighted to continue our long-term relationship with Marks and Spencer by delivering these exciting store developments," said John Moss, Managing Director of AMEC's design and project services business.

"Our understanding of MandS' operations and an early involvement in this programme will enable us to become effective on site extremely quickly and to deliver the remodelled stores on schedule, safely and with a minimum of disruption to customers and trading".

The new work follows the successful completion this year of seven remodelled stores in Bury, Dumfries, Handforth, Blackpool, Darlington, Workington and Pudsey in time for the peak trading period before Christmas.
