The 'best home cinema in the UK', costing almost GBP1 million to build, has at its heart a control system from worldwide leader in advanced control and automation technology, AMX.

The control solution, operated from a single, ultra-powerful handheld touch screen panel integrates and simplifies control of an array of media servers, DVD players for every region in the world, television feeds, three satellite systems, and the highest quality commercial cinema digital projector on the market In addition, the panel controls the Lutron lighting system, air-conditioning, heating and a top-of-the-range 'Stewart' film screen and curtains, which automatically adjust to frame the picture format; from 4:3 television ratio to widescreen cinema formats

Computer modelled to achieve ultimate acoustic performance, the cinema room was built with an acoustically-insulated 'floating floor', isolated from the craftsman-built walls.

The walls are manufactured to an accuracy of 3mm along their entire length and height and designed to be intentionally 'out of square' to minimise sound reflection.

The room is completed by a ceiling suspended on 56 independent springs, and which is also isolated from the walls.

The interior decor was designed by leading cinema design guru, Theo Kalomirakis.

Having achieved optimum acoustic conditions, for the cinema, the owner equipped the room with the best audio visual equipment on the market, including an ultra high end Mark Levinson sound system and Wilson speakers.

With the number of devices and complexity of the equipment being controlled by the system, it was important to make the user interface as simple as possible.

The AMX touch panels feature menus that are designed to be totally intuitive, so that any user can simply and easily operate everything in the cinema; calling up films, TV or music from any of the multiple sources housed in the equipment room.

The touch panel signals are transmitted to the individual devices via an AMX Netlinx controller, which is able to communicate with each device linked to the system.

Pre-programmed routines enable, for example, a single touch screen icon to be pressed and start a film to play by simultaneously opening the cinema curtains, lowering the screen, dimming the lights, starting the specific DVD player or media server, and running the projector.

Control of the equipment can be through the 8.4 Modero wireless panel or through a larger 17 hard-wired panel.

All of the media feeds can also be transmitted to other LCD and plasma screens in the house, including a purpose-designed games room, complete with full sized snooker table, table football and bar.

A dedicated 17 AMX touch panel is used to operate the room's lighting, show films or TV channels on a 50 plasma screen and play music from either of two juke boxes.
