Aquafence new process to improve dyke heightening
Flood protection pioneers provide solution for rising water levels in dyke equipped regions.
A new system for attaching AquaFence elements to the top of dykes has been developed, making the innovative semi-mobile AquaFence flood protection solution a serious option for dyke heightening.
"AquaFence is traditionally used in flood plains, close to river banks or coastal areas where it can be tethered directly to the ground via earth screws or a pre-fabricated concrete base," says Helge Krogenes, Managing Director, AquaFence .
"In these circumstances it has been proven as highly effective at protecting property from flood waters but we have been looking at ways to provide the benefits of AquaFence to address the problem that many dykes have - that they are simply not built high enough." BCC B.V.
in the Netherlands and AquaFence has developed a new prefabricated concrete base for AquaFence to sit and be highly secure on top of dykes and sea walls.
The toughened construction will not tilt and does not require deep incisions into the concrete of the dyke to be fitted.
In order to install the concrete base quickly and easily, a new machine has been developed that digs into the dyke in 2 steps, so that the elements of the concrete base just have to be placed into it.
The various elements are sealed with rubber between each other to ensure there is no water ingress into the structure of the dyke itself.
"Once the base has been built into the dyke, AquaFence can be installed quickly and easily to provide extra height to a dyke when the need arises".
"The inherent strength and cost effectiveness of AquaFence makes it a very attractive prospect to the problem of dyke heightening, which is traditionally an expensive and laborious process," concludes Helge Krogenes.
