Arnold Laver Group is returning to the Bramall Lane site it has called home for 80 years as part of a new showpiece GBP25m commercial and residential development.

One of Sheffield's best known businesses is turning back the pages of history to take its place at the forefront of Sheffield's renaissance The Arnold Laver Group is returning to the Bramall Lane site it has called home for 80 years as part of a new showpiece GBP25m commercial and residential development

The 3.25 acre former Olympic sawmill site next to Sheffield United's Bramall Lane football ground has been transformed to include high tech offices, 188 apartments and houses, a local convenience food store, landscaped green areas and car parking space.

It is the start of a new era for the Arnold Laver Group, a key player in the UK timber industry.

Founder Arnold Laver set up business on the site in 1927 and the firm used it until two years ago when its headquarters team moved out to make way for the new development -the first time the link with the site had been broken.

Staff moved into temporary premises at the former 'Gleesons' Chantrey House building on Chesterfield Road, Woodseats while the new site was being developed.

Not even Hitler's bombs, which devastated its premises, succeeded in shifting the firm from the site.

Nearly all of its buildings and offices were wrecked in the December 1940 Sheffield Blitz and not one piece of timber longer than six feet remained.

Ten days later, however, Lavers' never-say-die attitude resulted in the firm re-opening.

The new Bramall Lane development, by West Yorkshire-based Magellan Residential in partnership with the Arnold Laver Group, is an important part of Sheffield's regeneration and will provide a boost to the local economy as well as giving the community much improved facilities.

The Laver Group will occupy the prestigious office accommodation on the site from December 20.

Mark Bower, Director and Company Secretary with Arnold Laver, said: "It will be wonderful to be going back because the Bramall Lane site holds so many memories for us.

We have expanded away from the site in recent years but it has always been the heart of the group.

"To be returning there as part of such an important and impressive new development shows our commitment to the city region's economic revival and underlines how importantly we regard the immediate local community and the regeneration of the Sharrow and Highfield areas".

The state-of-the-art office space on the high profile, gateway site is of bench-mark quality.

Climate-controlled and energy efficient, it will accommodate the Group's head office staff and accounts department, as well as providing training facilities.

The 'glass-wrapped' design of the offices will make them an integral, involved part of the community, with passers-by able to see staff working and moving about the building.

Mark added: "Our new facilities on this site are in keeping with our objective to keep the Group in the vanguard of the timber industry and it is fitting that we are doing that in the very place where the business had its beginnings all those years ago".

The Arnold Laver Group is now in the hands of its third generation of Lavers and has an enviable record for investment in new technology, training and marketing.
