Arnold Laver Timber World has joined the campaign for a greater use of wood-based products in the construction of the London 2012 Olympics.

Arnold Laver Timber World is giving its backing to Wood for Gold, a wood industry initiative ahead of the 2012 Games to promote the use of legal and sustainable in the developments of stadiums and the athlete's village Arnold Laver Timber World, which has 13 branches around the country, has given its backing to the campaign by becoming the first Gold Sponsor

The company aims to become a key partner in pushing the use of timber in major construction projects, such as the Olympics.

Arnold Laver recently announced it is developing a major new distribution depot at Rainham, East London, in close proximity to many of the new facilities being produced for the Games where it aims to supply sustainable materials for new buildings.

Andrew Laver, managing director of Arnold Laver, said: "We are pleased to give our support to this important initiative, which aims to put pressure on the Games' decision-makers in using wood for the development of the Olympic site.

"The event presents an opportunity to not only showcase the best athletes Britain has to offer, but how the country has a vast amount of expertise in developing exciting and sustainable Stadia.

"Wood must play a prominent role in the range of projects planned for the Olympics and Arnold Laver aims to be at the forefront of those developments." Wood for Gold has strong support from MPs, peers, Assembly Members and local councillors to push forward the use of wood.

The campaign has also worked with the Olympic Delivery Authority and continues to lobby them on the industry's behalf.

Wood for Gold has already received cross party political backing and is supported within the wood industry by the Timber Trade Federation, the Confederation of Forest Industries, British Woodworking Federation, TRADA and wood for good.

Craig White, Chair of Wood for Gold, added: "Wood is particularly suited for use in the Olympics because it is grown in an environmentally sustainable way.

It is a safe building material, which will allow buildings to be constructed off-site before being transported to the Olympic Park, thereby spreading the benefits of the Olympic legacy beyond the city boundaries and reducing transport onto the site.

"The use of wood in such a high profile development will provide the UK wood industry with a platform from which to sell their products to the world and to demonstrate the very best in wood based design.".
