The world's leading green energy prize, the Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy, will be presented by Al Gore in London next Thursday.

Former US Vice President Al Gore will present the awards for the world's leading green energy prize, the Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy, in London next Thursday.

The awards recognise pioneers of renewable energy and energy efficiency from the UK and the developing world.

Eight contenders from the UK will compete for four awards and more than GBP140,000 of prize money.

The ten overseas contenders from countries as wide ranging as Bangladesh, China, Ghana, India, Laos, Nepal, Peru, Philippines and Tanzania, will compete for five awards and more than GBP200,000 of prize money.

Prize money is earmarked to help project expansion and replication in other communities both locally and nationwide.

"The Ashden Awards are a powerful reminder that well designed and managed local sustainable energy initiatives can tackle climate change while meeting the needs of local communities.

Tackling these issues simultaneously - in both rich and poor countries - is critical to addressing the twin planetary challenges of climate change and sustainable development," said Mr Gore.
