Ashzip standing seam roofing system from Ash and Lacy Building Systems has been installed on three schools in Edinburgh, as part of the 'Smart Schools' programme.

The Ashzip standing seam roofing system from Ash and Lacy Building Systems has been installed on three schools in Edinburgh, as part of the 'Smart Schools' programme to raise educational standards by creating a better learning environment for pupils and teachers Ash and Lacy supplied the roofing materials for Firrhill High School, Oxgangs Primary School and Braidburn Special School, all located on Oxgangs Road North in Edinburgh

Funding for the plan was secured through a private public partnership (PPP) agreement whereby private financiers lease the school buildings to the local council.

The lease is held for 30 years, hence it was crucial that the roofs were durable and robust; capable of withstanding harsh weather conditions.

In addition, the educational authorities required the buildings to meet the technical approvals for wind and weather.

Topek (BUR) , the roofing contractor employed to carry out the installation, specified the Ashzip standing seam roof system, confident that it would comply with the standards stipulated by the partnership groups.

Scott Biddle, Project Manager of Topek (BUR) , commented - "Ash and Lacy provides the best value in the market".

"Their quality products are backed by Ash and Lacy and its holding company".

"The roofs were simple to install and aesthetically striking." By using the Ashzip system, Topek (BUR) were able to address concerns on how to achieve the required levels of airtightness on the various buildings.

The Ashzip system is designed to reduce the need for end laps; metal lining sheet perimeters are fully sealed using a simple zip-up machine and this minimises the loss of heat and air.

Architect Stuart Baxter of Holmes Partnership further added that Ashzip was chosen for its suitability to control rain drumming reverberation and to satisfy the appearance and durability requirements for the building.

Firrhill High is a six year comprehensive school with over 1,000 pupils and 70 staff members.

In addition to the Ashzip roof, Ash and Lacy's Ashtech rainscreen cladding system was chosen to prevent water ingress to the refurbishment of the PE Complex comprising a games hall, gym, dance and fitness studio.

Ashzip roofing was also used for a new block for teaching Science, Maths and History.

Oxgangs Primary School and Braidburn School were both new builds.

Oxgangs Primary was partially damaged by a fire in October 2001, consequently the multi-million pound development was well-received by the school.

Braidburn School for children with special needs is now equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, replacing the ageing Graysmill and Willowpark special school.
