"We need to promote innovation to lift productivity levels which will be one part of a coordinated approach to addressing the current skills shortage," Mr Williams said.

AIB's focus on industry-driven research reflects the intent of the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr.

"I want the Councils to help bridge the divide between business and research, to assist Australian industry transform itself and to collaboration with other players in the innovation system," the Minister said in the media release announcing the consultations.
