KSS Design Group invest in Autodesk

KSS Design Group Predicts "Huge Dividends" From Investing in Autodesk AutoCAD Revit Series

KSS Design Group predicts "Huge Dividends" from investing in Autodesk AutoCAD Revit Series Autodesk's building design and documentation system gains further momentum with latest large order KSS Design Group has invested in 21 licences of Autodesk AutoCAD Revit Series, one of the largest orders for the building design and documentation software to date

KSS IT director, John Low, predicts, "using Revit will pay huge dividends by reducing drawing time - and by creating valuable, re-usable information at the very start of the design process".

KSS Design Group offers architecture, interior design, graphics and branding in the UK, Europe and beyond, specialising in the sport and leisure, education, healthcare, commercial and residential sectors.

The sale was made through Autodesk reseller, Excitech who also offered training and consultancy.

John Low explains that the team had been happy using its Unix-based Sonata software as, like Revit, this was based on parametric object technology.

But, when Sonata was retired, the architects found it limiting to go back to 2D design.

"Then we discovered Revit; a more powerful piece of kit than Sonata and Windows-based at that".

"I couldn't wait to see it and have not been disappointed," he says.

John Low is a real evangelist for building information modelling, a digital approach to building design where all the information needed about a building is integrated in the same underlying database and represented within each model or view.

"I no longer want to see one of our talented architects with one hour left until deadline, spending five minutes thinking about a layout, knowing that it will take the rest of the time to draw it," he says.

"Having Revit at every workstation gives each of our architects and designers their own creative tool to realise their ideas - and early indications are that they are thoroughly enjoying using it," he adds.

Now, because of Revit's parametric change engine, last minute revisions are quick and easy to complete, leaving far more thinking and designing time.

As a 3D model is being created at the same time as the design develops, decision making about dimensions and materials is quicker and much more straightforward.

John Low points out that they will also gain big benefits from Revit's visualisation capability.

"Our architects also have the satisfaction of getting the whole job done themselves, instead having to brief a 3D modeller/visualiser to finish the job for them - an expensive and frustrating task".

"It is often at this stage when most of the important design decisions are made, so it makes sense for the actual designer to be hands-on at this time." "Working closely with KSS Design we can see that Revit will help achieve significant savings both in time and through higher quality design," says David Light of reseller Excitech". "If this is successful, the goal at KSS is to extend the number of licences further and have its entire design staff trained to use Revit within the next 12 months.".
