Waste PVC-U sourced from window and door fabricators is being 100% recycled.

Waste PVC-U sourced from window and door fabricators is being 100% recycled into what a leading wiring accessories manufacturer claims are the 'greenest' cable management products in the industry MK Electric uses 100% recycled extruded lengths of PVC in its production process from its established supplier PVC Group, a Recovinyl recycler

This means its systems offer the most recycled content of any comparable ones on the market.

Overall, over 90% of the company's cable management range, including skirting and trunking, is made from recycled material.

Waste PVC-U, including off-cuts and bar lengths, is collected by PVC Group from fabricators across the UK and Ireland.

It is then processed to remove all contaminants and ground into a high-quality blended powder for re-use.

'As market leaders, MK Electric requires very high grade material to manufacture its products.

We have been a long-term supplier to MK Electric for more than 20 years and are committed to supplying a high quality of recyclate using up to date state-of-the art technology, that enables us to meet their stringent quality requirements,' comments Joanne Makin, PVC Group Director.

Using PVC recyclate supports MK's commitment to sustainability in two ways; firstly by diverting over 12,000 tonnes of PVC per year from landfill and secondly, by preserving natural resources with associated savings in energy and providing a significant reduction in carbon emissions.

MK Electric has developed products from recycled material to the same exacting quality standards as those produced from virgin polymers, manufactured to ISO 9001:2000 certification and guaranteed for ten years.

Given the UK construction industry's commitment to improve sustainability across the whole sector, sourcing 100% recycled products that can truly demonstrate 'closed-loop recycling' can make a significant contribution to providing environmentally-friendly solutions.

MK Managing Director Mike Southgate says manufacturers have a responsibility to make more efficient use of materials.

'There is a marked change in emphasis on sustainability issues.

Initiatives such as the Code for Sustainable Homes, the 2012 Olympic Construction Commitments and the Government's Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) have put sustainability to the top of the agenda for the construction industry'.

He added: 'Our cable management products show that we have taken the issue seriously for some time now'.

His comments are echoed by Roger Morton, of Axion Recycling, Recovinyl's UK agents, who says: 'As the PVC industry's recycling initiative, Recovinyl is working with manufacturers like MK who are keen to include high grade recycled content in their products.

This is not only a sustainable and cost-effective re-use of PVC, but it is also the right thing to do for the environment.

'Recovinyl is also discussing the use of recycled content with other leading manufacturers, in the DIY and computer sectors for example.

Advanced recycling techniques are providing high quality PVC and other plastic recyclate that can successfully be re-used in a variety of new products.

And this environmentally-friendly approach is something that consumers are increasingly embracing.' Recovinyl is funded by the PVC industry body Vinyl 2010 formed to demonstrate commitment to sustainable development.

It is backed by the British Plastics Federation and supported by the Waste and Resources Action Programme.
