Recycling consultancy Axion Recycling launch comprehensive new service producing Site Waste Management Plans for construction firms working on large projects over GBP300k.

Due to become a legal requirement from April 6th 2008, the regulations will force companies to make detailed plans for the waste generated on site With millions of tonnes of unused building materials being discarded as waste every year, SWMPs are set to have a major impact on the industry

Focussing largely on on-site operations, the plans identify the types of waste that will be generated and how best this can be re- used or recycled.

Axion's team of experienced waste management professionals can produce a full SWMP, which includes writing the plan, carrying out a waste audit, managing the waste and organising the collection/recycling of different waste streams, monitoring and final evaluation.

Alternatively, firms can selectively choose aspects of the plan service to suit their budgets.

'Interest and feedback in our service is very positive,' comments Axion's Commercial Director Roger Morton.

'Particularly popular is our advice hotline for the duration of the project offering companies information on UK-wide outlets for recycling different types of materials'.

The plans aim to reduce the amount of waste produced on construction sites, prevent illegal tipping and improve recycling of materials that would otherwise be landfilled.

Axion's flexible service saves companies' time in terms of producing their mandatory SWMP, while ensuring compliance with the law.

By providing a structured approach to management and recycling on site, SWMPs should help firms to reduce waste management costs.

Roger adds: 'With environmental issues top of the agenda, we expect this significant legislation will be rigorously enforced as failure to comply will result in fines, or even criminal conviction.

Of the 400 million tonnes of solid materials used in the UK's construction industry, around 125 million tonnes ends up as waste.

'The profile of sustainability has never been higher; the introduction of SWMPs is another step towards a more sustainable future, both for the industry and the environment.'.
