With the ever-increasing emphasis being placed on the environment and sustainability, what better location to install a green roof system than on a Nursery School.

With the ever-increasing emphasis being placed on the environment and sustainability, what better location to install a green roof system than on a Nursery School.

To raise the awareness of children to their surroundings and the environment, it seems only natural to encourage them as early as possible to see not just how we mould our environment but also of the impact we can have on it too.

As children are particularly receptive to textures and colour, what better way to start the learning process than with a living roof that will change with each season.

From green in the early summertime to reds and yellows in the latter summer months - a natural process for these touchy-feely sedums.

It is because of this important teaching process, Bauder feel very privileged to be able to offer city children the opportunity of having their own inner city haven, by the installation of their extensive green roof system on the new nursery Park Lane School, Brent.

This lightweight masking material is one of the finest green roofs available on today's market.

The sedum blanket is a genuine ecological masking material that really does place the environment first.

During production, recycled materials are used as much as is practically possible, thus reducing costs and extracting the bare minimum from nature, making this a green roof that is green beyond its appearance.

The entire system can weigh as little as 65 Kg mU, with the emphasis placed on making green roofs more attractive and accessible to as many parties as possible.

Cost effective and minimal maintenance are primary reasons for local authority selection, whilst environmental benefits to both the building and the surrounding habitat are others.

Upon completion of the project, beneficial values to the building include protection from ultra-violet light, insulation factors and extension of the roofs lifetime.

Environmental benefits include reduction of greenhouse gases, attenuation to rainwater run off, reduction of ambient air temperature to name but a few.

In our current society there can never be enough emphasis placed upon the importance of minimal environmental impact and sustainability.

People must be aware of the influence the building industry can have and be prepared to take the necessary measures to ensure that action is taken to aid this now crucial matter.

Because of this, looking to the future is of equal importance, with the confidence to go beyond green roofs and to be forerunners of brown roofs too, a now much recognised necessity for rare bird and insect life.

For example it is only wasteland that attracts the grubs necessary for the sustainability of the Black Redstart, an endangered species of bird that is currently making headlines.

These are sites where rubble and grit are the finished requirement as opposed to sedums or turf, making skyward wastelands to help retain our nature's habitat.

If we can encourage children to accept both green and brown roofs as everyday concepts, surely this can only result in a better understanding of our environment and how its precious future lies within their generation's hands.

"We have tried to achieve as sustainable a green building as possible, with regard to energy efficiency, etc.

We feel it is important to make the children aware of these issues and to think about the part they can play.

The Bauder extensive green roof is a true physical representation of our goals.

A true eye-catcher that is stopping traffic and making people look", says Martin Francis Head Teacher for the Park Lane School.

Whether they are to provide habitable havens in an otherwise urban environment, blend buildings into areas of natural beauty or provide wastelands of sustainability, domestic or commercial, Bauder firmly believe that their Green Roof Systems are one-stop roofing solutions that deserve true consideration for both today and for tomorrow.
