Sustainable buildings are a growing culture within Ireland, with St.
Mary's Credit Union, Navan County Meath being a fine example.
It is Ireland's first 5-storey timber frame building whose attention to detail is second to none.
With the recognised fact that our planet is under pressure to sustain current lifestyles, Navan Credit Union was built on the 'Factor 10' principal, which basically means using less of everything much more efficiently - a theory that is always possible in some way or another, whatever type of building is being constructed.
The Challenge.
Prolonging the life of the building was a key element to its design.
Keeping down the use of external energy sources and investing in energy producing devices were all positive moves which offered a payback period that was fully justified through lifecycle analysis.
Other factors such as noise reduction, particularly rainwater, and sustainable issues all had to be taken into account when deciding upon the final materials from which Navan Credit Union was to be created.
The Solution.
As part of the sustainable element a Bauder Green Roof System was decided upon for Navan Credit Union's crowning glory.
Rainwater noise was reduced, and, furthermore, the green roof re-oxygenated the ground plane which was turned from a green landscape into a built landscape.
The use of the green roof restored the natural balance and visual enhancement when the roof is seen from a high level.
The Outcome.
Ireland has always been proud of its natural beauty, stunning scenery and its building tradition.
Therefore, it only seems logical that within the construction industry every measure is taken not to spoil nature and to build buildings that are totally practical, whilst being as sympathetic as possible to their surrounds.
Navan Credit Union is a true representation of what is possible and can be seen as a sustainable example to inspire.
