The new roof has been topped off with a sedum blanket, bringing the woodland floor up and over the building allowing it to harmonise with its surrounding habitat.

Extensive green roof system at Wood's End Lodge, Attleborough.

The Project.

Wood's End Lodge, Attleborough is a privately owned house whose exterior, whilst portraying a modern feel has been sympathetic to its woodland setting.

The varying levels and curvatures of the roof have been topped off with a sedum blanket, bringing the woodland floor up and over the building allowing it to harmonise with its surrounding habitat.

The Challenge.

The roofs at Woods End Lodge were anything but straightforward.

Flat insulation boards had to adhere to tight curvatures, with the limited flexibility of 100mm thick boards making them an inappropriate option.

With no roof plan available to aid estimating, the approved contractors namely GRM Roofing Company Limited, had to continually monitor the material wastage created by cutting the products to fit the roof shapes, to ensure the project would remain within budget and be completed without compromise.

The Solution.

Two layers of 50mm thick insulation were installed to create the necessary flexibility properties whilst attaining the required U value.

Straight aluminium trims, provided in channel sections, were cut and fixed to tight curved perimeters giving the roof a neat and tidy outline.

Scaffolding was transported from section to section with precision coordination between all parties throughout the contract, ensuring each segment was fully complete before re-erecting the scaffolding for the next phase.

All roofing works were staggered, including phasing the built up waterproofing system which had to remain watertight at all times.

The Outcome.

Woods End Lodge, Attleborough is a project that has delivered the highest quality, taken time out for thought and has not cut any corners.

The surrounding flora was an obvious influence on the building, both in its shape and the final products chosen for the exterior.

Although the sedum blanket finish is an absolute eye-catcher, it is the considerable detailing works housed beneath that are a truly remarkable feat.

Quite simply Woods End Lodge is a project that has taken professional detailing beyond textbook standards.

"During the 14 years that GRM Roofing Company Limited has been installing green roofs, Woods End Lodge has proved by far to be the most demanding on the workforce".

"The relationships between all parties, and the confidence we have in Bauder products has enabled my contractors to produce a project of which they can justifiably feel proud".

"The curvatures of the roofs and the complex moulding of the system to suit had to be watched at all times to ensure material wastage was kept to a minimal".

"Finally, with the curved roofs intersecting each other, and separating and dispersing to varying levels, means that Woods End Lodge has taken detailing works to new heights, way beyond those associated with a more traditional and straightforward barrel vault roof".

Glenn Minter, GRM Roofing Company Limited.
