Baggeridge has assisted in the development of the Fearn Island Mills project in Leeds after its Magma Red Multi bricks were chosen.

Leading brick manufacturer Baggeridge has assisted in the development of the Fearn Island Mills project in Leeds after its Magma Red Multi bricks were chosen for the construction of a new seven storey mixed use development situated in the heart of this cosmopolitan city centre The building, which neighbours two early 19th century grade II listed mills also undergoing refurbishment as part of the development, is unique in that the bricks have helped to create smooth curved corners which have been wrapped effortlessly around the side elevations

Having been constructed for commercial and residential use, it was important that the structure looked visually appealing yet would also complement the nearby mills.

Inside, the building's internal elevation faces southwest towards the river Aire and is glazed in large vertical strips with bands of render between, presenting a modern and complimentary backdrop as contrast to the rugged patina for the restored mills.

Cartwright Pickard Architects chose this particular brick and Peter Cartwright, the director in charge of the project said: "We wanted a product that was aesthetically pleasing to the eye and had some natural variation to the surface finish and colour".

"The building had to be compatible with the architecture of other neighbouring warehouse-style structures, and the method of manufacture of the bricks gave us this honest colour and texture which convinced us that they would be the best option for this particular project".

The final product on site is striking, the bricks have proven to be durable during construction and allow the smooth lines of the building to be achieved perfectly where it curves around the building's corners.

The dominant red colour of the bricks with deep recessed pointing is clearly visible at Fearn Island Mills and this has been achieved by using bricks from Baggeridge.
